ALTON PROBUS AIRCRAFT ENTHUSIAST GROUP VISIT TO OLD SARUM

The Aircraft Enthusiast Group of Alton Probus Club visited Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury, home of the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, on Tuesday 12 April.

It was a lovely day for a cross country drive and we received an equally warm welcome on arrival with a welcome mug of coffee and plates of chocolate biscuits. The visit then commenced with an informative presentation in their conference room where we learned the history and background of the collection.  The collection was originally started by enthusiasts at nearby Boscombe Down airfield but moved to Old Sarum four years or so ago. Starting with one hangar they have since taken over a second hangar to house the growing collection. Since moving from Boscombe Down the group have widened the scope of the collection and now seek to represent not only Boscombe Down but also aviation in the Wessex area. We saw a wide selection of aircraft ranging from a First World War era BE2 to a Tornado with a Chipmunk, Meteor, Jaguar, Sea Harrier and several helicopters in between. There was also a working Link Trainer of 1945 vintage which several members enjoyed “flying”. Following the visit members adjourned to the nearby “Old Castle” for an excellent late lunch.
